DREAM LABOR PRESS

Dream Labor Press is a collective self-publishing project founded by a group of Chinese female graphic designer-authors who are primarily based in the United States. Our work focuses on storytelling and fiction-making in the liminal space between places and identities.

By means of zines, artist books and other small publications, we play with objects, symbols and memories. We endeavor to communicate layered narratives that resonate with different walks of audiences and to push the boundaries of design.

THE MEME-ING OF POLITICAL DISCOURSE

Zhihan Qian
2023

6.8 x 10 inchThread sealing, hard cover
186 pages
This project aims to explore the tendency and underlying logic of meme use by collective narcissism groups. The designer delves into the terrifying potential of meme-based images and the emotional discourse they convey in the political discourse of the social media age. The designers analyze how collective narcissists communicate their ideas through images and emotions rather than through strict content editing, and explore the significant impact of these meme images on nationalist, racist, and authoritarian discourses.

The book is a sober presentation of the entire research process, revealing the complex interplay of technology, psychology and politics in the digital age, and encouraging a more nuanced and critical discussion rather than just an emotional appeal.
