DREAM LABOR PRESS

Dream Labor Press is a collective self-publishing project founded by a group of Chinese female graphic designer-authors who are primarily based in the United States. Our work focuses on storytelling and fiction-making in the liminal space between places and identities.

By means of zines, artist books and other small publications, we play with objects, symbols and memories. We endeavor to communicate layered narratives that resonate with different walks of audiences and to push the boundaries of design.

THE INDEX OF [SUBWAY STATION MOSAIC] IN NYC

Doris Liu
2022

6.5 x 6.5 inch
String-stitched
110 pages
This booklet is a homage to the kaleidoscopic shapes and colors on the walls of hundreds of subway stations in New York City. Compacted into an easily portable size, the booklet is a unique traveler’s note.

The palettes of each mosaic are extracted into strips that edge the pages. When the booklet folds, the pages naturally form a slope that reveals the abundance of colors. The booklet is folded twice and stitched in the middle. Thus, a full spread makes four panels, adding to the freedom of reading.
