DREAM LABOR PRESS

Dream Labor Press is a collective self-publishing project founded by a group of Chinese female graphic designer-authors who are primarily based in the United States. Our work focuses on storytelling and fiction-making in the liminal space between places and identities.

By means of zines, artist books and other small publications, we play with objects, symbols and memories. We endeavor to communicate layered narratives that resonate with different walks of audiences and to push the boundaries of design.

Every time I pass by a construction wall, I'm always attracted by those little "windows" on it.

Oh?
What's that?
Is that a mirror?
Are they windows?
Are they for quarantine?
Are they for viewing?
What's inside?
Who's there?
Wow
!

With my curiosity, I looked in.

The most exciting part is that there's always a different view. Sometimes it is under construction, workers are going back and forth in it; sometimes it is an abandoned wall with lots of wonderful graffiti on it; sometimes it is an empty field with weeds growing; sometimes it is a famous spot under restoration; sometimes it is impossible to see inside and instead I can only see myself and the reflection of the street behind me.

At first I just focused on what was inside the windows, but then I realized that the windows and walls themselves were also fascinating! Whether it’s the shape, material, color or the things pasted on them, they are all very diverse. Most of them are 12 inch by 12 inch square panels on hunter green walls according to New York regulations. But there are also some that do not follow the rules. Rectangular, diamond or round or even no regular shape ...... They are in red, yellow, blue and some are even covered by various posters and graffiti. There are also a lot of different graffiti and stickers on the windows and walls. Every time you go to a new construction site, you can find unique walls and windows.
